Atop a hillside, just east of the city, is a grand structure that once housed the first manufacturing company founded and headed by a woman. Located in Mt. Adams, the Rookwood Pottery is now a new American restaurant with a great sense of history.
Let’s start with the exterior. A beautiful wood deck extends from one side of the German-influenced structure and is home to communal wooden seating, small tables, an outdoor bar and a small amphitheater surrounding a fire pit. In the summers, it is the ideal brunch spot with panoramic views of the river and our lovely downtown. In the colder months, the interior is perfectly cozy with exposed brick, wood and an incredible collection of vintage objects and wall hangings. Tall ceilings, a large curved bar and a variety of elevations make this space one of the most unique in Cincinnati. Not to mention, the giant kilns that remain from its time as the Rookwood Pottery – which you can dine in, or use to host a small private party.
Their food and beverage offering is just as enchanting as the location and architecture. An excellent offering of sandwiches, burgers and salads are complemented by hearty (carnivorous and vegetarian) main courses and quite a few stand out starter plates. The preservation plate, an assortment of seasonal pickles, shrimp, with cheese and crackers is crisp and different. The deviled eggs are legendary. And surprisingly, the vegan burger is enjoyable and moist on a Challah bun. Order any of the sandwiches and be delighted.
A popular brunch spot, the Rookwood has a wide variety of items that cater to both the healthy and the hungover. For the latter, there is the ultimate back-to-life dish: the double by-bass. Cream cheese biscuits smothered in white cheddar grits, sausage, bacon, topped with a sunny side up egg, pimenton hollandaise and hash browns. You can up the ante to a triple (plus goetta gravy) or quadruple (plus Berkshire pork belly) if the occasion calls. For a lighter option, go with the delectable Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. They will change you.
What you won’t miss at Rookwood is comfort. From the chef-driven, palate-pleasing dishes to the craft cocktails and touched-by-hand decor – you eat, drink and feel right at home. This gorgeous space is also available to rent for private events and weddings, a popular occurrence in the holiday season. Come with your appetite and your loved ones. Hunker down, belly up and be transported by this rustically delicious Cincinnati staple.
