Food for the Soul at First Slice Pie

Just as we had all suspected, Heaven is in fact located in Chicago. Not only is it easy to find in multiple locations, but you can even have a slice of it all to yourself for just under four bucks! First Slice Pie Café serves unbelievably mouth-watering pies with a whopping helping of community outreach on the side.

Located in Andersonville, Albany Park, and Ravenswood the First Slice Pie Cafés offer a bright and cozy atmosphere to spend your sunny mornings or your after-dinner dessert binge. These cafes are a pie enthusiast’s paradise. After just one bite, even the tamest taster will find their mind racing with thoughts of which pie to try next.

Want a handmade pie that you can indulge in all week, or a few different types for your upcoming get-together? Well residents of Chicago’s North Side can simply stop by on the way home and grab a whole pie to-go. Want the satisfaction of eating an entire pie by yourself without the guilt of actually doing so? Stop by and pick up a miniature pie made just your size!

Heaven, of course, wouldn’t be complete with just pie (although some may argue this point) and neither is First Slice. Their chalkboard menu boasts an array of delicious meals including sandwiches, wraps, quiche, salads, soups, and community plates. The sandwich list offers creative options that you won’t find at your typical sandwich shop such as duck confit with mozzarella, goat cheese with poached pear, and a Chicago-style vegetarian sandwich. The bacon and sweet onion quiche has turned out to be a showstopper, and all quiches are served with a side salad.

The name First Slice has heartwarming significance. Chef Mary Ellen Diaz understands that the first slice of a freshly baked pie is the most valuable. This slice is the first taste of what the hard work and love of baking put together. To Diaz, giving this slice to others fosters a sense of community and togetherness that can satisfy the hungry soul. Bringing this principle with her during her creation of First Slice Pie Café, Diaz uses the cafes as support for bringing dignity, a sense of belonging, and full stomachs back to the needy and homeless across Chicago.

First Slice takes community outreach seriously. They work with many community programs such as The Broadway Youth Center and StreetWise Work Resource Center, serving an average of over 600 meals to the community each week. These meals are made with the needy in mind and offer homemade, quality meals that would usually be hard to come by for the homeless community.

A portion of purchases at the cafes go toward this mission, but there are many other ways that First Slice funds its commitment to the community as well. One of the most exciting ways to get involved is through their meal subscriber program. Subscribers pay a weekly price to receive three meals a week. These quality meals can be stored in your freezer, needing just a drop in the oven before your family has a home-cooked meal on the table. The best part is that these subscriptions pay for the same delicious meal to go to someone in need as well.

Another way that these meals are funded is through participation in the annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Artists donate handmade bowls which First Slice then fills with delicious soup and bread served for $25. The proceeds go toward feeding the homeless while the bowls serve as a reminder of the empty stomachs across the city.

First Slice Pie Café is simply one of those local businesses that Chicagoans just love to support. Great food and heavenly desserts are served with a purpose and give back to the community that we love so much. If you are interested in volunteering, signing up for weekly meals, or even just stopping in to try a taste of delectable pie, then check out First Slice’s website at for more information.
